Defying the Odds: Golfer Achieves Back-to-Back Holes-in-One at Bonita Bay Club
BONITA SPRINGS, FL, January 24, 2024 – A Bonita Bay Club member has achieved the near-impossible: back-to-back holes in one during the Women’s Ringer tournament.
Bonita Bay Club (BBC), history was in the making as Carolyn Mossing, a golf club member, sank consecutive aces on the 16th (using a DEMO Calloway 9 hybrid/99 yards) and 17th (pitching wedge/85 yards) holes on the Marsh course on January 16th. This extraordinary accomplishment has sent ripples through the golfing community, with experts scrambling to calculate the astronomical odds of such an event.
“The National Hole-in-One Registry lists the odds of making a hole-in-one twice in the same round at 67 million to 1,” said EJ McDonnell, director of golf at BBC. “To put this in perspective, you’re more likely to be struck by lightning while holding a winning lottery ticket than to achieve back-to-back holes-in-one.”
After waiting for her first hole-in-one in her 25 years of playing golf, Carolyn wasted no time in making her second. It was so quick that when Carolyn called the golf shop to report the second ace, she was told Joyce had already called in her hole-in-one from the 16th. Zach Maxwell, an Assistant Golf Professional, could not believe it when she said, “No, I just made another one on 17.”
“These ladies – Joyce Williams, Donna Shearburn, and Lindsay Smith- were solid on Thursday. We were all so relaxed, laughing, joking, and having a wonderful day, improving on almost every hole,” said Carolyn Mossing. “I had just commented that I was in Michigan with Joyce playing when she got a hole-in-one and felt like I had been hit with a stun gun witnessing her achievement. I stepped up to #16, thinking maybe someday I’ll get a hole-in-one. Suddenly, my ball kept rolling, turned, and disappeared. On Hole 17, I stood up (with the same ball) to keep things moving and suddenly saw the ball hit the stick and go in. At this point, my emotions took over, and we all went crazy. I think one of my teammates fell on the ground. I continued to use my same ball, Callaway Chrome Soft, with the words NANA lovingly written on the ball for the rest of the round. Dreams come true at Camp Bonita.”
Some words from her group, a day they will never forget…
Joyce Williams – “Her first hole-in-one was a perfect shot at the flag. Amazingly, on the very next hole, she struck another beautiful shot that rolled straight into the cup for her second consecutive hole-in-one. We couldn’t believe it – a truly unforgettable round.”
Donna Shearburn – “I met her on the range Tuesday and suggested she get a hole-in-one. On Thursday, she made two consecutive holes-in-one on 16 and 17. Everyone was ecstatic to witness this incredible achievement with our amazing group.”
Lindsay Smith – “When I suggested she get her own, she stepped up to the 16th hole with her demo Callaway and made it happen. The celebration had barely begun when we reached the 17th hole; incredibly, she did it again.”
The Marsh Course, designed by golf course architect Arthur Hill, is known for its challenging layout and stunning natural beauty, providing the perfect backdrop for this historic moment.
This will be talked about in clubhouses across the country for years to come.
